SOUL

Joseph "Amp" Fiddler is a musician who has an extensive list of credits that extends across a couple decades. Fiddler, who produces and sings in addition to doing the bulk of his duties on keyboards, organs, and pianos, has played on records by Prince, the Brand New Heavies, Ramsey Lewis, George Clinton, the P-Funk All Stars, the Dramatics, Primal Scream, Was (Not Was), and Too Short. With significant help from bass-playing brother Thomas "Bubz" Fiddler, Amp released With Respect on Elektra in 1990 as Mr. Fiddler. Although the record didn`t fare well commercially, it was a solid update of ’70s funk with modern production sensibilities.

In 2002, Amp issued a 12" called “Basementality” on the Genuine label. Featuring a remix from close associate Kenny Dixon, Jr. (aka Moodymann), the record was an even split between modern soul and funky club music, with Fiddler`s talents boldly displayed. The “Love and War” single came out the following year, and the full-length Waltz of a Ghetto Fly saw release in January 2004 and received critical acclaim. Another solo album, Afro Strut, was released in 2006, and featured Corinne Bailey Rae. His latest release, on Strut/K7 records and entitled Inspiration Information, is a studio collaboration with reggae legends Sly and Robbie.

Having studied jazz in school and with Harold McKinney while growing up in Detroit, Amp began his career in popular music when he went on tour with the group Enchantment. Later, in the mid ’80s, after joining George Clinton and Parliament/Funkadelic, he toured worldwide with the group and extensively worked as keyboard player and co-producer in studio recordings. He also performed with Jamiroquai, Seal and Maxwell.

More recently, he has released various singles for UK label Genuine, and has been working with Carl Craig (Detroit Experiment), Moodymann and other such Detroit luminaries, as well as Corinne Bailey Rae, Sly and Robbie and more.

His albums have been supported throughout with brilliant shows with his live band at gigs and festivals. And he seems to be a really nice and modest bloke too; in his own words: "Conversation and not segregation needs to be the focus for people to have an understanding of each other and look at situations unconditionally." Right On!
