Combining funk, soul and jazz with samba, Azymuth are the legendary Brazilian three piece orchestra who were responsible for creating a new sound and genre of their own: Samba Doido (Crazy Samba). Jose Roberto Bertrami, Ivan Conti and Alex Malheiros make up the trio – legendary musicians who together have released over 20 albums in 35 years and who since 1995 have delighted their original fan base and won over legions of new converts with their outstanding albums for Far Out Recordings.

Pianist, songwriter and band leader Bertrami is recognised as one of the legends of Brazilian music, remaining one of its most influential keyboardists. With his unique playing and writing style, full of colour and harmony, he is responsible for the intensity and individualist approach of Azymuth. Ivan Conti, known to his friends as Mamao, is Azymuth’s spontaneous and incredibly energetic drummer and percussionist, and the real hardcore Carioca of the trio. On bass is Alex Malheiros, who learnt his trade playing with the master of Brazilian swing, Ed Lincoln. Alex is respected in Brazil as one of the original groove masters, and like the rest of the band, he has performed and recorded with the greats of Brazilian music.

Azymuth have toured the very best venues over the decades, and in 2008 played a legendary show with Azymuth fanatics Madlib and Mochilla at the Los Angeles Echo Plex. They tracked down Conti in Rio, 2002, to kick-start what would become 2008’s Madlib/Ivan Conti album Sujinho, released under the name Jackson Conti on Mochilla Records. Their European tour followed, taking in famous venues including Paris’s New Morning and London’s Jazz Café.

Azymuth have graced the world’s top jazz festivals: Monterrey, Montreux, North Sea Jazz and Glastonbury, and the finest venues including Blue Note of New York, Tokyo & Milan. In 2009 they sold out a UK tour, taking in Ronnie Scott’s jazz club and playing a capacity main stage at the world-renowned Southport Soul Weekender.

Butterfly, released on Far Out in 2008, was a huge critical success and a big hit at their infectious live shows. The Times Music Supplement in the UK and Billboard in the US called the album fantastic and innovative, and Songlines described it as “the best Azymuth album…truly sublime stuff.” This huge statement confirms the enduring passion and creativity of this trio, who are utterly joyous when playing live; there have been shows where the band has been literally carried back on stage to play a third encore, and the huge demand for Azymuth continues!

In 2011 Azymuth toured Europe in support of their brilliant new studio album Aurora, a record ranking alongside their legendary early recordings which sees a return to the huge old school sound, yet is amazingly fresh and instantly compelling. Azymuth have a big buzz behind them once again and this recording lives up to all the hype with a string of unforgettable tunes from dancefloor fillers and warped psychedelia to lush jazz soundscapes and heavy, grooving funk.
