DRUM & BASS

Goldie (Clifford Price) was initially known for being a graffiti artist in Walsall in the Midlands, so well-known, in fact, that he started to make a living out of it, earning commissions from the local Council and appearing on local magzine shows like Pebble Mill. By the mid 80s, he was living most of the time in New York, living the hip-hop lifestyle and, in 1986, appearing alongside Afrika Bambaata in the graffiti art movie Bombing.

Then, back in London in 1988, hes back in London doing a bit of artwork for Soul II Soul and generally hanging out round the West End as a sort of anti-celebrity. At this time (1990-91), Hip Hop is slipping away and the new British hardcore breakbeat is the up-and-coming music. Fabio and Grooverider are the main men on the block and Goldie is a convert!

But then, all of a sudden, hardcore has a couple of cheap hits and the whole of the scene, scared by the overground attention, promptly dives back underground into darkcore! NOw the music gets faster and ragga and dancehall music come in. This is Summer 1992 and it is Fabio and Grooveriders Rage at Heaven which is setting the scene. And then boom! Jungle erupts everywhere and Drum n Bass music is born!

Three labels dominate: Moving Shadow, Suburban Base and the mighty Reinforced Records and it is to the last that Goldie gravitates, first of all doing design and A&R work then persuading them to let him do music. His first recordings are with Lynnford Jones while Goldie learns his way round musical instruments and recording equipment because Goldie is an ideas man. But Goldie is a fast learner and his first Reinforced release in 1992, as Rufige Kru, is a single called Killa Muffin b/w Krisp Biscuit(RIVET1220), followed by the Dark Rider EP (RIVET1224 Darkrider, Menace, Believe and Jim Skreech) and, in 1993, with Mark Rutherford, the Ghosts EP (RIVET1244 Terminator II, Fabios Ghost, Ghost Of My Life and High Rollerz). But he is also working with Dego and Mark Mac of Reinforced and co-writes a track for their Return Of Tek 9 EP and another for their 4Hero EP Journey From The Light.

By 1994, Goldie is moving on and the Metalheadz identity (which first appeared as his artiste name for the 1992 release of Terminator), becomes the name of Goldies very own label.

And then its 1995 and Goldie is signed to London Records and in the Autumn his Timeless album is released, containing a mixture of older tracks that have been made as he has been cutting his path to stardom and newer tracks made with Rob Playford, including the epic 21 minute title track. The album goes straight into the UK album charts at No 7,

Drum n Bass Music has arrived in the world and Goldie is its ambassador!
