MONTY MORRIS

Artist

SKA

Also known as ‘Humpty Dumpty’ after one of his early hits, Monty was second only to Derrick Morgan in popularity during his Ska heyday, as he scored hit after hit for the likes of Prince Buster and Clancy Eccles. Following the success of his nursery rhyme adaptation, he followed with versions of ‘The Old Lady In The Shoe’, Solomon Gudie’ and even ‘Cinderella’.

His penchant for adaptation stretched to folk songs like Oil In My Lamp’, and Penny Reel’. This however, should not detratct from Morris’ bona fide song-writing skills as he penned tracks like ‘Money Can’t Buy Life’ and ‘Say What You’re Saying’. The last is the one that most remember him for as it was a big hit for both Dennis Brown, and Little John. In 2002 ‘Say What…’ was revisited by Beenie Man for his Tropical Storm set when he duetted with Janet Jackson on the single, ‘Feel It Boy’.
