REGGAE

Born Delroy Chandler in Devon Pen, St Mary, Jamaica, it was through the rock and roll that the young D.Y.C.R. first got involved in music, before turning his hand to reggae, composing and singing his own tracks.

It wasn’t long, however, that his friends pointed out that, although he was a competent singer, his talents lay in writing humorous, topical lyrics. And thus, through his early performances at the Temple Hall New Testament Church, his career as a self-styled “chanting dub poet” began.

1996 saw his first single, “To Be Saved”, released on the Black Solidarity label. It was only a few months later that DYCR had his first hit: the Milton Moore-produced, Sound Proof-released single “Fire Flame.” An album of the same name followed the next year, and over the years singles have came fast and thick: Murder, The Uprising, Dem Man Deh and Smikle all proving popular in the Jamaican charts.

His 19 track second album, ‘Delroy’, was released in 2006 on Tad Records to wide acclaim, highlighting his knack for addressing topical issues head on; “Di Tape” deals with the possible contents of the tapes discovered in the murdered trade negotiator Peter King.
