Based on true events, the 1 Day in question is a day in the life of Flash - a young man immersed in a world of drug dealing, gun toting inner city violence. It could well be the worst 1 day of his life, a life that depends on the raising of £100k in 24 hours to be paid to his ‘boss’ who has been released early from prison and wants what he left with Flash for safe keeping.
Directed by Penny Woolcock (Tina Goes Shopping, Tina Takes a Break, Mischief Night), 1 Day is a look at the stark realities of criminality and violence, the choice (or lack of) between such a life and a life on the straight and narrow, a choice young black men in inner cities face every day. Woodcocks’ film is not only a film about what goes on in parts of the black community of Handsworth Birmingham, its cast are all from the community, none are actors or had even acted before.
It’s authenticity hasn’t entirely worked in its favour with the powers that be, as Birmingham police have stopped the film being screened in the city on somewhat dodgy grounds – they claim the film will ignite and incite violence and disorder on the streets although the film has a 15 certificate and far less violence than any Die Hard or Hollywood ‘action’ movie. But Bruce doesn’t star in this one I guess..
Westbury has 2 tracks in the film, Stepping Razor by Mad Professor, and Out Of Love by Slim Smith and the Uniques, these are just part of a musical collage of reggae hip hop and grime which soundtrack the lives of the characters growing up as first and second generation immigrants in a UK inner city.
1 Day opens on Friday November 6th in cinemas across the UK
